ESD (electro static discharge) is the electrostatic discharge of charged persons or items through galvanic contact or through a spark which often remains unnoticed by the person affected due to its low energy. The reasons for ESD are electrostatic charges which are caused by separation of charges due to friction charges of different materials or because of electrostatic induction in electric fields.

These systems have the advantage that people can freely move and work in the EPA without having to be earthed by wrist earthing.
